The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa,1645-1652, Gian Lorenzo Bernini
The sculpture utilizes unconventional spatial setting to display motion and emotion. The story tells of Saint Teresa’s vision of an angel stabbing her with an arrow of divine love, giving her a pleasurable pain. The sculpture is set up to look like a theater, along with another sculptures on the side to resemble an actual audience. The recreation of a spiritual experience was encouraged by Catholic thinkers, citing that it would increase the believer’s devotion.
